Checklist For Buying A Shipping Container

October 5, 2022

When you need to buy a shipping container, it's crucial you know what you're looking for and what's involved in the purchase. Many people end up buying ineffective or poor-quality products because they're simply not sure of what to look for to assess the condition of their container. To ensure you buy a high-quality shipping container, we've put together this handy guide to everything you need to be on the lookout for when inspecting a shipping container for sale.

YOUR INSPECTION CHECKLIST

When you're buying a shipping container, it's important to ensure you are getting value for money. Make sure you look out for the following:

  • Major rust: If you are interested in a used shipping container, you should expect to find some surface rust. Don't neglect the possibility of deeper rust, though. If you do find substantial rust or are unsure of how deep the rust is, simply tap on it with a hammer to see if it breaks up.
  • Edges: Assess the edges of the container for any bends, which indicate it might not be structurally sound.
  • Holes: You might not be too worried about holes in your container, especially if they're situated in an area you're intending to cut out. Holes in the roof or floor, however, could be cause for concern. You can check for holes in a container's roof or foundation by standing in the container with the door closed and seeing if any light penetrates. If there are holes, your container naturally won't be watertight.
  • Doors and locks:  If you're using the container for storage, you will need a working door and lock system. Doors should be able to open all the way and close with no gaps. As the bottom of container doors are prone to rust, it's important you give that area a detailed assessment. Locks should close and latch properly and should be free from rust.
  • Flooring: The floor of a shipping container is its foundation, regardless of what you're planning to use it for. Any significant damage will compromise the container's durability and safety. Inspect the flooring for holes, delamination, rust or gouges.
  • Odours: An unusual or unpleasant smell present in the container is a sign of potential contamination - so make sure you use your nose as well as your eyes.

In addition to the physical inspection, it's important you have an idea of the type and size you need. One-trip, cargo-worthy, wind and water-tight and as-is containers all have unique specifications making them suitable for different uses. If you're not sure which size or type of container you're after, don't stress - our team can help you find the best container for your needs.
